Oh Wildstorm fans, this is a great day! October 4, 2016 it’s been announced that in February 2017 DC Comics will launch another pop-up imprint, Wildstorm, like Gerard Way’s Young Animal with Warren Ellis as curator and writer of the main book THE WILD STORM with artist, Jon Davis-Hunt, the artist of Vertigo‘s Clean Room. 2017 also happens to be the 25th Anniversary for WildStorm Studios!!
Update: This is all my speculation on the new WildStorm pre-launch. For new details read THIS too!
So far other series to spin out of The Wild Storm are Michael Cray, WildC.A.T.s and Zealot.
Could Storm Watch, and Gen 13 be far behind?
WildC.A.T.s is a no-brainer since it was the book that started it all.
At the bottom I discuss what I think of the title. I suppose they felt they already tried a bunch of solo books with Grifter, and he only ever worked within the concept of the WildStorm Universe (WSU), so maybe leave him in this book to brew and grow out and graduate to his own book later?
also has a promo image. Nope,.. I was wrong, it’s not here. BUT, she’s one of the popular WildC.A.T.s of the past. Her solo outing in the New 52 also didn’t work out well. I think she too can benefit from starting out in the team book.
And Michael Cray, a.k.a. Deathblow.
I wonder why the focus on his civilian name. I think Deathblow didn’t work out well in the DC Universe (DCU) previously because he just showed up on the scene as Deathblow, and no one really got a sense of who he was and why they should care. Is this Michael Cray an attempt at building to to Deathblow?! Hell YES! And from promo images below, he’s not white anymore.
Then there’s Zealot.
Why Zealot? In the WildStorm Universe I suppose she was kinda like a cutthroat alien version of Wonder Woman, kinda, mostly because of the whole Coda thing being very much like the Amazons. 1. this could give her more of a distinction, and build her importance. Why? Not only is she Kheribium, an alien race, but in her original iteration, she had been existing on Earth for … literally ages. She’s lived through the history of the world almost. She could provide some grounding, and maybe she’ll introduce the concept of Millenium babies who also have white hair who are immortal. Though I’m not so sure she is the same thing, so maybe not. Other than that, perhaps they wanted some diversity the first 3 books to launch out of The Wild Storm.
Here’s what Jim Lee had to say about Warren Ellis:
“There are precious few visionaries in our business and fewer still like Warren who can elevate mythos with both stylistic panache and idiosyncratic spectacle. His work at WildStorm remains the tone in which best defiens and reflects the WildStorm Universe. I know I speak for WildStorm fans the world over when I say can’t wait to see what Warren and Jon have in store f fans in February!”
Yes Jim, you definitely speak for me!
WildStorm no longer part of DC Universe
It’s not a horrible idea. Atleast this way they can focus on characters and stories that people expect from WildStorm properties without having to fit them into the current iteration of the DCU. Rebirth has partially been about embracing DC‘s past, what made things great and accepting things for the what they are. They brought back the idea of legacy characters, and multiple characters from different worlds. Soon I imagine will be reintroducing a whole new multi-multi-verse.
I don’t think it’s impossible to have the WSU work in the DCU, but the writing has got to work. They have to be as important as the flagship books. I think trying to fit in the WSU made the DCU too crowded. The WildStorm characters that have been introduced into the DC Universe in the past seem to have lost their identity and purpose that made them who they were previously. You see a trend now of Marvel and DC focusing on their core books, especially those with the most multi-media exposure. i.e. films and tv.
In their own imprint, WildStorm characters and concepts won’t have to fight for importance and will have full focus. This can allow WildStorm to find it’s own identity again instead of feeling like the younger siblings to the big brothers and sisters of the DC Universe who are shells of the original characters shoehorned into their world.
Since Rebirth is a continuation of continuity from New 52 with tweaks, what does it mean for WildStorm characters and ideas that have already been introduced? In the New 52 Deathstroke, Amanda Waller and Black Canary were all once part of Team 7. Is that done away with? Are characters who were introduced in the New 52 like Grifter, Voodoo, Zealot, Hellspont, Fugi, Fairchild, etc. gone? Are characters like Apollo and Midnighter still around? They have a Rebirth series coming out soon, will that be put on hold?
Midnighter and Appollo Rebirth Series
Well having thought about all the possibilities of what The Wild Storm and WildC.A.T.s could possibly be BELOW in this post, it isn’t impossible that Midnighter and Appollo start out in the DCU and then are later brought into the WSU. Or maybe they’re different versions of them? eeeh.. not loving that. But with Warren Ellis at the wheel,.. anything is possible. Everything is new again right?
At the DC Comics “Meet the Publishers” Panel at NYCC 2016 someone asked about this and Jim Lee responded that for now, they exist in both for now and they are kinda having their cake and eating it too.
What Could The Wild Storm Be?
I’m a huge Wildstorm fan and have always hoped for it to return to it’s former glory and this could be it! I’m very excited to see what Warren Ellis has in store for us. I recall near the end of the previous incarnation of Wildstorm there was a report about an event by Warren Ellis called The Wild Storm. At the time I imagined it to be an event book that would bring Wildstorm to it’s former glory and somehow bring it into the DC Universe but nothing came of it because Wildstorm shift gears for the end. I wonder if this new Wild Storm title has anything to do with the previous announced concept, or does it only have the name in common. If it does and I’m right,.. perhaps down the line we’ll see an opportunity for Wildstorm to interact with the DCU, but in a new way? The reason why I think it probably will be a different way is because if it’s based on his initial idea for The Wild Storm, then it’d probably be a new concept since the 52 Earths and The Bleed were already old or current. Then again, since it’s been so long, and now we’re in Rebirth, it’s likely Warren Ellis tweaked it to be like a Rebirth of those concepts that began in Planetary, Storm Watch and Authority.
At the NYCC 2016 DC Comics “Meet the Publishers” Panel, someone asked about Planetary and Jim Lee said that for now it’s not in the plans to be a part of this incarnation, unless Warren decides to later on.
But, the book at first could be a re-imagining of the WSU, so in a way, it’s like a whole new origin, that can also be the precursor or prequel to the original universe except it branches out in a new way. So perhaps instead of seeing the WSU as it originally began, we will see it from days of Team 7, or older, Team One … and we’ll see the formation of whats to become I.O., Stormwatch, Gen 13, Wetworks,.. etc through the eyes of Zealot, Michael Cray, Jack Marlowe and various characters who will soon become the WildC.A.T.s.
Lets take a look at the character designs for The Wild Storm by Jon Davis-Hunt:
Okay this is interesting, I just looked at the title of the images. Who I thought was Voodoo
and Zealot, is NOT Voodoo or Zealot! And I thought the guy was Hawksmoor,.. nope!
Grifter a.k.a. Cole Cash
a.k.a. Deathblow unofficially at this point.
Engineer a.k.a. Angela Spica
Someone from the Authority
This was a surprise. Almost forgot about him. I thought this was Hawksmoor from the Authority. He is the founder and director of International Operations, a.k.a. I/O! He’s integral to the WSU
Lucy Blaze, is she related to Christie Blaze from Divine Right? Gasp! UPDATE: Lucy IS Zealot afterall. From Meet the Publishers NYCC2016.
Ok this sheds some light. These are possibly the stars of The Wild Storm. Definitely a little bit from different parts of the WSU
Warren Ellis made this statement,
“After long reflection, I couldn’t turn down the invitation to renovate the house that Jim Lee built, and refit its unique combination of cosmic paranoia and paramilitary conspiracy for the post-political space madness of the twenty-teen.”
Definitely sounds like The Wild Storm has been reworked for modern times! Could they be going back and reworking the WSU from the ground up? Probably. Will there be nods to the old stuff and reintroduction to old favorites? There better be! So maybe it’ll be a little bit new and old. Will we see Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, Travis Charet, Scott Clark, Brett Booth, Ryan Benjamin, Lee Bermejo, J.J. Kirby, J.Scott Campbell, Joe Madureira, Humberto Ramos, Matt Broome, Bryan Hitch, Frank Quietly, John Cassaday, Richard Friend, Oliver Nome, Dustin Nguyen, Sean Phillips, Tom Raney, Jesus Saiz, Pop Mhan, Justin Ponsor, Ale Garza, Alex Garner, Eric Canete,Carrie Strachan, Guy Major, Brian Hamberlin, Dan Norton, Alex Sinclair, Laura Martin, Neil Googe, Tom Cooker, Ryan Odagawa, Joe Benitez, Jeremy Cox, Michael Lopez, Trevor Scott, Joel Benjamin, Randy Mayor, Mathew Milla, John Tighe, Tom McWeeney, Joe Dunn, Wendy Fouts Broome, Wes Craig, Jason Johnson, Pete Woods, Allen Passalaqua, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Carlos D’anda, Tommy Yune, Dustin Weaver, etc doing atleast some covers or pin-ups? Please! Will we ever see other favorites:
Phantom Guard, Defcon 4, Disavowed!?!?
Will we see characters like the original cast of Storm Watch ( Battalion, Winter, or Diva), Tao, Ladytron, Condition Red, Savant, Jet, Crimson or concepts like the Bleed (likely, though it’s already part of he DCU), or the comet that made people into seedlings that gave them powers when activated? Will we see anything from imprints Cliffhanger or America’s Best Comics?
What Could WildC.A.T.s Be?
Sounds like maybe they’re looking back at the original concept of B! YES! Love the all that top secret organizations likeB. and agents stuff. I had always thought it’d be amazing to bring the story of the WildC.A.T.s back full circle to the beginning. To have a current storyline lead into the original WildC.A.T.s. with Marlowe being found in the alley, etc. That ofcourse would have to involve dimensional time travel or something. But thought it’d be cool to continue the latest incarnation of Wildcats that leads into the original WildC.A.T.s #1 either saying Marlowe came from the future, where the story would continue OR, restart from that issue #1 starting point again, reimagining the first issue and moving forward. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to see Jim Lee redo the original WildC.A.T.s?! OR will we be seeing the unfinished Grant Morrison Wildcats!?
We are to find out more details this weekend at NY Comic Con Panel “Meet the Publisher,” Saturday October 8, 2016 4pm – 5pm! I hope to be there to report back!!!!!!!! YES! Update: Unfortunately, nothing to update on the WildStorm front. Sadness.
