What is DC Legends

Hear it from Design Director Sean Dugan on DC All Access!

It’s a 4 vs 4, turn-based strategy game based on characters and concepts from DC Comics very much in the vein of MAA and Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes.  It had a long beta, over a year, maybe even 2 and officially launched November 3, 2016.  If you want to get an idea of what MAA was like, and why it may have failed and make your own comparisons, take a look at the various posts I did for MAA!  If you want to hear some of what makes DC Legends special or different from MAA, and my pre-launch speculation, check out my post, DC Legends Pre-Launch Details!

I’ve boldfaced some key words for this game, and will explain them more below in their own sections.  I’ve also used “character” and “hero” interchangeably.

In this game, you progress through the Story Campaign by battling.  The basic idea of battles and the gist of this game is that you have 4 characters on your team against 4 opponents at a time taking individual turns to use a Super Power.  The order in which characters will act in similar games is usually determined by some Stats, like Speed (SPD).  Turn order plays a part in strategizing, as it matters who goes when based on their Affinity, or relationship type, and Super Powers.  Which Super Power Ability and when to use it is important as it may have a cooldown or other factors which may prevent it from being available for use when you would’ve wanted to use it if it’s not if those factors aren’t considered.  Phew!   And this isn’t including the meta component to playing.  Ok,.. sounds serious, but it really isn’t until it gets really hard,…

Meta Game Play

The meta part is the collecting and management of the various resources in the game that allows you to Level Up characters, upgrade Super PowersEmpower Gear or increase a characters Rank (Stars) to achieve Legendary status.

Another meta part of the game-play is what it really means to win in PVP.  Sometimes, it’s just logic and mathematically what stats, abilities, etc would win the game if players were to focus on them.  At one point PVP was all about the “crit,” then if was about “evasion.”  This is due in part to abilities which players have exploited in order to win.  The reason why that changes is because the developers will either change some abilities or introduce new ones to try to balance the game.

Start the Game

In the beginning, there’s a pretty good tutorial that will explain everything in a reasonable pace.  You can just play and enjoy the game and not worry too much as you learn more things in the game that add depth.

Character Affinity Relationships

Besides being turn-based this game also has “rock-sissors-paper” mechanics,… like Pokemon except Pokemon has more than 3 types of Pokemon (water, fire, earth, plant, ghost, fairy, etc.).  In this game the types are called Affinity and there are three: Physical (Red), Mystical (Blue), and Energy (Green)

Rank and Legendary Rank Status

Rank

As represented by Stars, boosts overall stats, unlocks Super Powers.  In the character profile screen, the lower right hand corner shows you the character’s current Rank, and shows you the number of Fragments and Essence you currently have and what is required to achieve the next Rank.

A character’s Rank can be increase to Rank 5 (5 Stars).  Increase in Rank gives an immediate increase to current STA, AGI, STA and INT Stats, and PWR, Growth Modifiers (or increments of increase) for STR, AGI, STA and INT Stats, and Power going forward and can unlock Super Powers.  At Rank 5, the character can become Legendary when and will also changes in appearance to indicate it’s status.  Rank of a character is raised by collecting Fragments and spending Essence.  *also see Character Leveling Up

Note: I believe Growth Modifiers are what determines by how much STR, AGI, STA, INT and PWR are increased each time a character Levels Up in a particular Rank.  I’d like to confirm this.

*see Hero Collection and Fragments
*see Essence, Energy and Other Resources/Materials

Legendary Rank Status

Legendary Status is basically Rank 6.  After Rank 5, if you meet the requirements of Fragments and Legendary Essence, you may Rank Up to Legendary Status 1, and all the way up to 5 (represented by purple stars).

Legendary Essence

A currency used to upgrade Rank 5 heroes to Legendary and it’s 5 Ranks.

Chapter 1: Oa, Battle 1: Manhunter Foundry Ruins

You WIN and get rewards, AND Level Up

BACK TO CONTENTS

Character Leveling and Meta-Agents

Characters can Level Up by using Meta-Agents and spending Essence.

When you Level Up, the character’s STR, AGI, STA, INT, HP and PWR are increased by a value that seems to be different for each character.

Note: SPD, CRT CH, or CRT VAL are not increased by Leveling Up

I’ve been trying to figure out what the increments in increase, or Growth Modifiers are for Stats when a character Levels Up, but having difficulty determining a pattern.  When Rank is Upgraded, the game shows you the current Growth Modifiers for that character and their increase due to Ranking Up.  I’ll use that type of data to see how the math works out.  So far the values have decimals which is a little confusing, but I will update this as I figure it out.

Here’s what I know so far.

Rank changes Growth Modifiers.  *see Rank

Rank 1
PWR is consistently +22 per Level Upgrade for all characters
Stats* STR, AGI, STA, INT go up by anything from +4-6 for all characters
HP* varies from +46-55 for all characters.
*Both the Stats mentioned and HP have incremental increases, or Growth Modifiers, that are sometimes, for an individual Stat or HP of any given character, consistently the same number, while others switch between two values in a pattern I have yet to discover for each individual character Level Upgrade.

e.g. Flash seems to have a pattern or alternating between +46 HP and +47 HP for each Level Upgrade while in Rank 1.

When Rank is Upgraded, Stats and PWR get an immediate increase, the increments in increase, or Growth Modifiers, for PWR, Stats, and HP also increase and it can also unlock Super Power Abilities.  *see Rank and Legendary Status

Wraith Arena PvP

Jump to Leagues and Rewards

The Wraith Arena is locked until Player Level 10.  Unlock to compete against other players in PVP.  Winning a battle in PVP grants you Trophies.

Arena Energy (Red Lightning Bolt) is used to start a PVP Battle.

It seems like you can earn anywhere between 1-15 Trophies from a single PVP Battle win?

Update 11/30/16: PVP battles are now held in Metropolis: Centennial Park.  Previously it was at Oa: Guardian Council Chambers.

Opponents Tab

Under the Opponents tab, you will find 10 opponents.  Usually the last 4 are a bit harder to defeat.

Speculation on how matches are created:
From what I’ve gathered so far, it seems that matches might be determined by matching a player’s highest potential PWR based on characters they own, regardless of whether or not they are on a team.  In addition, a snapshot of a player’s previous Team is used which is supposed to explain why someone with lower PWR might have beat you, because they actually beat a team you previously used.  Over time, the snapshots are updated to more recent teams, but will always be behind your most current team.  Can anyone confirm?

Refresh
At the bottom there is a button that lets you refresh this list of 10 for 1 Arena Energy.

Update: 11/30/16
When you refresh, you are now pitted against opponents of your current League.

Reward for defeating 10
If you defeat all 10 opponents without refreshing you will collect a special reward.  Sometimes it’s 50 Battle Essence, but recently I’ve noticed they awarding 5 Fragments!  (from one of the Exclusive characters available from the Arena Packs in the Shop!)

Battle Log

The Battle Log will show you who has been attacking you in PVP.  It will show you your wins and losses when defending.  It also shows you how much Trophies you lost.  You may spend 1 Arena Energy to take “revenge” to regain the Trophies you lost.

Leagues and Rewards

The amount of Trophies you have determine your League and League Rewards.

Notes: Ideally I’d like to be in the League which rewards enough Fragments to get a character.  So depending on how many Fragments it takes, it could help you determine your goal in PVP.

e.g. Looks like in the Solomon Grundy PVP right now (11/3/16), ideally you want to atleast be in the Super Hero III League at 1400 Trophies in aroger to get 25 Solomon Grundy Fragments which is equal to the amount needed to get him.

If you’re super ambicious you could figure out how many Fragments it would take to get the PVP character to Legendary Status and make your goal that!  The amount of Fragments needed to obtain a character is different for each character I think and they also differ in how many Fragments are required to advance to each Rank.

Speculation: Looking at the League Rewards You see the incriments used in rewarding Fragments.  From where they start rewarding Fragments you see that there are 4 Tiers of Leagues, each consisting of 3 sub-tiers.  Assuming ALL PVP characters specifically can be gained or Rank Up with the same amount of Fragments, so they can keep the amounts for League Rewards consistent; since the very TOP League rewards 400 Fragments, maybe that’s how many is needed for Rank 5?  So every 2 Leagues that rewards Fragments is equal to 1 Rank, with exception to the last League, World’s Finest being Rank 5?!

TIP: Hold a finger down on the Fragment graphic to see more details about it.
