The Wild Storm #1 Preview & Variant Covers Meanderings, Reveal: TWS #3 Solicitation

Read below for the latest updates and images for the upcoming WildStorm reboot!

Images from Jim Lee, Tula Lotay, teaser image, and preview pages of The Wild Storm #1 coming out February 15, 2017!  Solits for Issue #3!  The start of the new WildStorm is here!

Rich Johnson of Bleeding Cool reported these images from Jim Lee and Tuly Lotay who I think provide variant covers for Issue 1.

Jim Lee’s Engineer

My Thoughts

Definitely shows how her technology is much more invasive than in her previous incarnation.  It’s a nice image, but I wish it were a full image with a background.  It’s more like a sketch.  Maybe in the final image they’ll pull it off as a metaphorical thing, showing her isolation, like she’s in a white room or something?  That would atleast make more sense and look better.

Tuly Lotay’s Zealot and Angela?

Image may contain: 1 person

My Thoughts

One might argue that her image is just as sketch-like, but it atleast incorporates multiple characters, some effects and more color, which tells more of a story.  I really loved her work on Ellis’s Blue Rose!

He also provided the first teaser image for The Wild Storm and these 3 preview pages!

My Thoughts

Very interesting.  Here we either see an homage or a foreshadowing of the classic Zealot facial red markings, the circle on her forehead and spikes going up the side of her face.  I get if it’s just a homage, but I’d prefer it being a foreshadowing.  I like the idea that Ellis works it into the story and have it mean something versus taking them out completely too make her look more grounded in reality.

It seems like the format for this series may be 3×3 or 1×3 boxes for the most part.  The 3×3 allows for a tight sequence of events and 1×3, like in the 3rd preview page allows for a more widescreen look.

Is she like an assassin or something?  He clearly kills a man here.  A man with 8 fingers.  Maybe that’s the “Covert” part of C.A.T.s, whose mission is to destroy all evidence of aberrations or something caused by mutations.

My Thoughts

Not sure what to make of this page.  She continues out of this building by going up stairs, but exits on the ground floor of the street.  So it seems like she may have been under ground.  Aliens or mutants hiding out under ground?  As she appears out front, she and a man in what seems to be a ‘cleaning’ van spots eachother  Ok.  Maybe they know eachother.  It’d make sense that he was the “cleaner” here to clean up her mess, since she didn’t do anything to get rid of the body or “evidence.”

My Thoughts

Here’s the scene we’ve been reading all about in the first two solits of Engineer rescuing some guy falling from a building.  Nothing is revealed here, thought it seems like she has some symbols or words on the armor on her chest.  Not sure what it is, or what it says if anything.  Can’t make it out.  Is it Asian?  Is it alien?  Is it who she stole it from?  The armor definitely looks like a suit, versus organic, like it’s a part of her body, like it was in her previous incarnation.  This version, even though is supposed to be implants and such looks more like a suit of armor.  She does still have the wire-for-hair things still though.

My Thoughts

Not much to say here, but the’re going for a very simple iconic image, which is good.  The storm front square and lightning graphic in red.

And here’s a solicitation for the 3rd issue from Comics Alliance

THE WILD STORM #3

Written by WARREN ELLIS • Art and cover by JON DAVIS-HUNT • Variant cover by JAMIE McKELVIE • Variant cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS

Angela Spica is wounded, alone and hiding from black-ops killers sent by her own benefactor, the man she thought responsible for her well-being—the mastermind behind an assassination attempt the Engineer just foiled. But, unknown to her, she might yet have a chance to survive this terrible day. The Grifter has a plan.

A storm is building. And through it all, a mysterious woman crackles though the electrical devices that inhabit our lives, slipping among the invisible networks of the world.

There’s something new in the world.

On sale APRIL 19 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T+

My Thoughts

Oooo, Jamie McKelvie is doing the variant!  Awesome!

Sounds like Grifter is not a part of the organization she is a part of and he’s on his way to save her like the Terminator’s Reese!

Who is this on the cover?!  Is this a new Jenny Sparks?  The solit does mention a mysterious woman “crackles through the electrical devices.”  Sounds like she travels and lives within technologies.  The perfect spy.

And then the solit says “there’s something new in the world.”  Ooooh exciting!  A part of me really wants them to WildStorm-out unabashedly, and not try to make it too reality based.  I kinda miss the crazy “wild” outfits and colors!  I think the comics community wants their comics to be big, colorful and loud again!

  1. I think the woman on the cover is actually Jenny Quantum. If so, it is more a good job of john davis hunt and his character design, all the costumes and physiognomy that resemble Arab and Indian peoples update this character by adding cultural traits to the pre-existing color palette of the original version.

  2. “I think the comics community wants their comics to be big, colorful and loud again!” You mean you want that, not me, not my friends.

I have read the first 2 issues and I loved it. I was never a fan of the Wildstorm universe; I liked Ellis’s Planetary and The Authority, and that’s all. This new book is the best DC has made in years, since the last Animal Man.
